Objectives:

The primary aim is to delve into diverse methodologies, materials, and technologies that facilitate language instruction. Participants will enrich their understanding of language and the theories underlying second language acquisition. A distinctive feature of the program is the opportunity to engage in substantive interactions with both Canadian and international colleagues. Furthermore, participants will have the chance to immerse themselves deeply into both the English language and the unique culture of Montreal.

The program’s structure is designed to offer an integrated curriculum. It consists of a blend of courses, workshops, and periods of supervised student teaching. This curriculum is organized around a series of six, one-week units, namely:

The Language System of English

Delve into the intricate theories surrounding the origins of language. Journey through the comparison of various writing systems and gain firsthand experience of phonology – the production of sounds. Understand the nuances of phonetics – how sound patterns make up the English language. Dive deep into morphology to learn word formations, syntax for sentence structures, semantics to uncover conveyed meanings, and pragmatics to grasp the practical uses of languages.

Teaching, Learning, and Assessing

Engage in in-depth discussions about the processes of language learning. Understand the integration of the four essential skills – reading, writing, listening, and speaking – and how they contribute to a model of communicative competence. This section also sheds light on the implications of these models in the design of classroom activities and the assessment of student performance.

Language Classroom Practices

Acquire skills to effectively plan lessons, design activities, and evaluate learners. Familiarize yourself with techniques to foster interaction, give constructive feedback, use textbooks efficiently, create original teaching materials, handle mixed ability level groups, incorporate strategy training in lessons, and manage classroom dynamics.

Student Teaching Practicum

Undertake supervised team-student teaching sessions. This module allows participants to implement the concepts and materials developed over the duration of the program. Additionally, they receive valuable feedback from seasoned teachers. Requirements

To be eligible for the Standard Level 1 teaching from TESL Canada Federation, candidates must possess a University BA or BSc, or its equivalent. However, those without a Bachelor’s degree can still enrol. Although they will not be eligible for TESL Canada’s certification, they will receive a certificate from Canada College of Health and Business, which empowers them to teach ESL courses globally, barring TESOL courses.
